NEW PEUGEOT 9X8 HYPERCAR – DESIGNED TO RACE

PEUGEOT unveils the prototype of the Hypercar 9X8, its brand-new generation competition car, set to debut in 2022 in the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC). Hyper-efficient, powered by a hybrid engine and equipped with all-wheel drive, the PEUGEOT 9X8 is part of the Neo-Performance strategy developed by PEUGEOT, which aims to offer more virtuous and responsible performance, both on production vehicles than in competition. An unprecedented convergence of the work of the PEUGEOT Sport engineering team and the PEUGEOT Design team was implemented to give birth to 9X8.

It is after intense months of joint work that the development engineers under the responsibility of Olivier Jansonnie, technical director of PEUGEOT Sport, and the designers led by Matthias Hossann, PEUGEOT Design Director, reveal the main lines and the aerodynamic concept of this PEUGEOT 9X8.

The PEUGEOT 9X8 will succeed in the discipline the PEUGEOT 905 and PEUGEOT 908, victorious at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1992 and 1993 respectively, and in 2009.

With 9X8, Peugeot is deploying a real brand project around the concept of Neo-Performance, combining ultimate sportiness, technological know-how transferable to production models, efficiency and stylistic excellence.

The new Le Mans Hypercar (LMH) regulations, put in place by the FIA and the ACO to succeed the premier LMP1 category, offer more flexibility in the treatment of aerodynamic surfaces, it encourages radically new thinking and the design of innovative cars, and more open to the intervention of design teams. Engineers and designers took this opportunity to invent new creative processes, to break the codes and create a PEUGEOT Hypercar that is the founder of a new genre.

The initial 9 characterizes the Brand's extreme competition vehicles, such as the PEUGEOT Endurance 905 (1990-1993) and 908 (2007-2011), two iconic machines from the manufacturer.

The X discusses the 4-wheel drive and hybridization technologies available in the new PEUGEOT Hypercar, which extends the Brand's electrification strategy into competition.

As for the 8, it is the number which punctuates all the contemporary names of PEUGEOT: 208 and 2008, 308, 3008, 5008 and, of course 508, very recently passed into the hands of the same team of engineers and designers as the Hypercar, to become the first model to bear the PEUGEOT SPORT ENGINEERED label.

Breathtaking style

“I know the quality of work and innovation of the PEUGEOT Design and PEUGEOT Sport teams, but I must admit that they surprised me with this magnificent 9X8: thus combining a powerful brand identity, and such a fluid line and innovative, it’s simply brilliant,” says Linda Jackson, Managing Director of PEUGEOT.
“PEUGEOT obliges, the sketch that guided our work represented a feline ready to pounce,” explains Matthias Hossann, PEUGEOT Design Director. This attitude results in a cabin that tilts a little forward. Generally speaking, the PEUGEOT 9X8 incorporates the aesthetic codes specific to the brand: it is a fine, distinguished, elegant car, which inspires emotion and dynamism.

The 9X8 cockpit is also surprising, for the extreme attention devoted to it by the design team. “We wanted to offer a very particular variation of the cockpit,” emphasizes Matthias Hossann.
“Until now, this element was very anonymous: simply functional and generic, without any expression of the brand. By injecting our colors and our i-Cockpit, PEUGEOT’s own interior identity signature, we are refreshing this space. ".
“This should allow spectators to immediately identify a PEUGEOT when the images from the on-board cameras are broadcast.”
On the outside, the rims are meticulously crafted and punctuate the refined and clearly structured sides. The wings are perforated, revealing the upper part of the tires. The mirrors themselves are perfectly integrated, so that no obstacle seems to oppose the air flow.

A characteristic PEUGEOT signature, the three light claws on the front and rear headlights fully anchor 9X8 in the range. The new coat of arms bearing the Lion's head is present and backlit on the front and sides of the car. Selenium Gray enhanced with contrasting touches of Kryptonite (an acidic green-yellow), the color codes on the bodywork and inside the cockpit echo the new PEUGEOT SPORT ENGINEERED label, initiated with 508 and 508 SW.

NO WING! The opportunities of the LMH Le Mans Hypercar regulations

At the rear of the PEUGEOT 9X8, finely chiselled elements accommodate the three luminous claws of the lights, which frame a large diffuser, topped with a humorous inscription: “We need no rear wing” need rear wing).

“The new Le Mans Hypercar (LMH) regulations have been designed so that all the classic performance vectors are leveled,” explains Olivier Jansonnie, Technical Director of the PEUGEOT Sport WEC program. It’s exciting, because it’s up to us to invent, innovate and find opportunities to generate performance outside of traditional patterns. This was particularly the case for aerodynamics. The regulations allow us to have a single adjustable aerodynamic element, without it being specified that it must be the rear wing. Our calculations and simulations demonstrated that we could perform very well without a rear wing.”

The absence of this aerodynamic appendage has liberated the silhouette of the PEUGEOT 9X8, giving it a fluidity that we have not seen for decades. For the designers, accomplices of the engineers, it made it possible to sculpt harmonious and dynamic volumes, and to create vast surfaces connecting the sides or opening onto the front wheel arches.
A hyper-efficient hybrid powertrain

A 2.6 liter Bi-turbo V6 of 500kW (680hp) open at 90° - the thermal engine of the PEUGEOT HYBRID4 500kW powertrain which will be installed at the rear of the 9X8 - accumulates, as expected, the kilometers on the bench.

The 200kW electric motor/generator which will be placed at the front, the 7-speed sequential gearbox, as well as the battery are being assembled, to comply with the bench validation schedule. PEUGEOT Sport and Saft, a subsidiary of TotalEnergies, meet a technological challenge together every day by co-developing the high density, high power and High Voltage (900 volts) battery.

Le Mans, a laboratory for PEUGEOT

In addition to aerodynamic, mechanical and electronic efficiency, all the know-how of PEUGEOT engineering is validated in racing, and more than elsewhere in the extreme event that is the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The 5,400 kilometers that the cars cover at Le Mans in two clock laps is more or less as much as a Formula 1 car over an entire season. The level of requirements in terms of reliability and efficiency is therefore absolute.

Linda Jackson insists: “PEUGEOT’s commitment to Endurance goes beyond just competition: it is an extreme laboratory for Peugeot. This is also what explains why our link with Le Mans is so powerful. The sporting result is important, but perhaps even more so the validation of our technologies and our research during a 24 Hour race contested in ultimate conditions. We will test in competition the hybridization system and the technologies relating to the reduction of fuel consumption – and therefore CO2 emissions – that we are currently developing for our production vehicles. It is a source of pride for our PEUGEOT Sport teams to see their research integrated into the cars in our range. For our customers, this Le Mans laboratory is a guarantee of the quality of our cars. »

Through its commitment to the World Endurance Championship, PEUGEOT is opening a new register which is that of neo-performance.

The brand returns to endurance with the exceptional opportunity to work on the sport in the form of gasoline/electric hybridization. Electric hybridization is a technology mastered by PEUGEOT Sport for more than 10 years. The 508 PEUGEOT SPORT ENGINEERED draws its philosophy, technology and performance from this experience acquired with the PEUGEOT 908 Hybrid4 and the PEUGEOT 908 HY demonstrator, then with the PEUGEOT 208 HYbrid FE project and more recently the PEUGEOT 308 R Hybrid presented in 2015.

The 508 PEUGEOT SPORT ENGINEERED today represents the synthesis of this work and this technological mastery. She is the worthy heir of the previously mentioned projects. The DNA of competition and the technological mastery of PEUGEOT Sport are found in this vehicle, a synthesis of very high performance, controlled emissions values (46g CO2), and ZEV Zero Emission Vehicle mobility of 42km (WLTP) .
